K. M. MATHEW REMEMBERED

km mathew

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh remembered Malayala Manorama’s former Chief Editor, late K.M. Mathew, as an “Indian legend”. He was speaking on the function of unveiling the album containing commemorative stamp on K.M.Mathew issued by the Department of Posts from Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal at his office in Parliament House. He continued that Mathew left a legacy for people to follow as he received an album containing commemorative stamp on him. The album contained the First Day Cover honouring Mathew, which were released all over the country yesterday, which was the day of K M Mathew’s first death anniversary. Paying tributes to Mathew, Sibal said Mathew was a true nationalist who promoted great values through his newspaper and had worked hard for national integration and communal harmony.

It was the member of Rajya Sabha Mr.P.J. Kurien, who requested the Government to issue a stamp honouring Mathew, and said he had been a source of inspiration for many people and everyone who met Mathew was touched by his nobility and wisdom.

Mathew, former Chairman of Press Trust of India, played a key role in making Malayala Manorama one of the major Indian language dailies after he took over the reins of the media house .

Born on January 2, 1917, Mathew joined the organisation as Managing Editor in 1954 and became Chief Editor in 1973. He launched many publications such as women’s magazine ‘Vanitha’ in Malayalam and English, the English magazine ‘The Week’, farmer’s magazine ‘Karshakasree’, children’s magazines ‘Balarama Amar Chitra Katha’ and ‘Kalikudukka’ in Malayalam and ‘Magic Pot’ in English and the encyclopedic ‘Manorama Year Book’ in Malayalam, English, Hindi Tamil and Bengali. He encouraged young talent, and several professionals were specially trained and oriented to a popular style of journalism that in many ways changed the face of newspapers and the style of newspapering in Malayalam. He triggered a host of development projects in Kerala by initiating a series of seminars on industry and environment.

Mr. Mathew wrote two books, Ettamathe Mothiram (The Eighth Ring), an autobiography, and Annamma, in memory of his late wife.

In 1988, he received the Padma Bhushan. Mathew was honoured by several other awards, including Foundation of Freedom of Information Award (1991), National Citizen’s Award (1992), Ramakrishna Jay Dayal Award (1995), Durga Prasad Chaudhary Award (1996), and BD Goenka Award (1996).

Certainly, as Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama group, KM Mathew set new benchmarks in language journalism, and spearheaded a media revolution. He was a visionary who left a mark on the Indian media industry.

Bhagavata Hamsam Brahmasree Malliyoor Shankaran Namboodiri Passes Away

The well known Pandit Bhagavatha- Hamsam Mallioor Shankaran Namboothirippad (91) passed  away this tuesday morning at his residence following a stroke. He was badly ill for some period due to old age diseases. Starting his life as a temple priest he later found interest in Bhagavatham narration and dedicated his entire life to it.

Inspite of flying in the skies of knowledge and excellence, his life was as simple as that of a common man. He never expressed himself to be more important than any others and that tells the greatness of his personality.

He dedicated his humble life to the worship of Lord Ganapathy and to the rendering and exposition of the Bhagavatham. He was born on February 2, 1921 as son of Malliyoor Parameswaran Nampoothiri and Arya Antharjanam. Malliyur Sankaran Namboodiri was not born with silver spoon in his mouth.

His father was not keen on sending him to school only because he thought that by doing so his son will lose his Brahmanya and will get into bad company. And thus at the age of 14 Sankaran Namboodiri started learning Sanskrit. He became ill due to prolonged working hours at the temple, studies and lack of adequate rest. It all started with indigestion. his health deteriorated further in a matter of a year and was taken various places for treatment. But  nothing worked for him and finally he turned to Lord Guruvayoorappan as his final resort. He took this decision upon his mother’s advice.

And thus Sankaran Namboodiri reached the Sree Krishna temple at Guruvayur. It was there that Sankaran Namboodiri met the scholarly devotee Brahmasri Padappa Namboodiri who stayed at Guruvayur at that time. It was at this revered place that Padappa Namboodiri blessed his new devotee with lessons of Bhagawatha. It’s an unwritten rule that one should read the Bhagawatha everyday after learning the Bhagawatha. Thus Sankaran Namboodiri started reading out the Bhagawatha and along with it he also explained the same in a vivid manner. It was a moving experience for those who happened to listen to Sankaran Namboodiri. His Bhagawatha reading was well appreciated by one and all and soon he returned to his Illam.

Sankaran Namboodiri continued his pursuit for knowledge and visited various temples and maths showering his knowledge on others. His in-depth knowledge of Bhagawatha and its interpretations had good following wherever he went.

His Bhagavatham sessions are renowned for their blend of simplicity and erudition, attracting thousands of devotees. He was awarded the title Bhagavatha Hamsam, having successfully completed 2,500 Bhagavatha Sapthahas. He also awarded the ‘Poonthanam Puraskaram’ instituted by the Akhila Bharatha Sree Guruvayoorappan Bhaktha Samithi and ‘Dharmashreshta puraskara’ by Kerala Barahmana Sabha.

Sankaran Namboodiri’s navathi was celebrated on January 31.  His wife is late Subhadra Antharjanam , daughter of Mezhathoor Arappanattubhattathiri . His children are Parameshwaran Nampoothiri, Aryadevi, Parvathi Devi, Divakaran Nampoothiri.

The number of people coming to his house seeking blessings increased day by day but it never changed him. He was as humble as ever. Malliyoor Shankaran Namboodiri led a life to be praised of. He was a man to be admired and his death is a great loss to the mankind.

PEERMADE: A PLACE OF BEAUTY TO VISIT

peerumed images

Peerumed

Peermade is a small beautiful place that lies in the district of Idukki in Kerala. The cold climate of this region adds to its peculiarities.

Traveling along NH 220 the change in climate can be felt as we pass the Mundakkayam bridge. On crossing the bridge a cold breeze slashes our cheeks as if it tells of the approaching weather.

From there the topography changes to hilly. The roads are cut around small hills and a marvelous scenario of deep valleys and joined hills will turn on infront of our eyes. It is beautiful enough to make everyone praise the beauty, who comes there.

Long waterfalls seem as white lines drawn on a black background of rocks. As we move on the number of houses gets fewer and woods grew thicker.

The vehicle crawls up the twisted and steep road and mist will pass by our windows. It brings the cold which enters deep into our nerves and we feel our ears shut unable to hear the voices.

The natives used to wear ear caps to avoid this uneasiness and it serves remarkably well. The place has tourists althrough the year and we can see the small shops by the side of the road expecting them.

paruthumpara Kerala images

Paruthumpara

The destinations of most visitors include places like Panchalimedu and Parunthumpara.

Panchalimedu is a small hill which has a temple and it’s a pleasure walking there on the mountain that runs to the horizon. No bus service is there to this place and we should hire a jeep or an auto to reach there. And it’s fairly available to all those who wish to visit the place.

The latter is a steepy barren hill full of rocks and standing there, we feel to be on top of the world. Humans in the valley are hardly visible and large vehicles seem to be small toys. It’s comparatively easier to reach Parunthumpara than the former.

Two small palaces are also there nearby, which are somewhat surrounded by forest. They always welcome visitors to reveal our great tradition before them.

Strong wind always blew here which increases the strength of the cold. The wind is so strong that it often damages our umbrellas.

There are a number of resorts to facilitate the residing of the tourists. Three professional colleges function in this place and a thick pine forest stands there inviting visitors.

In short the beauty of the place is too attractive that no one who visits there will ever be able to forget the journey.
