New bus charges in Kerala announced
The state government announced new bus charges a few days before based on Justice Ramachandran Commission Report. The Cabinet decided to increase minimum fares for ordinary bus services from Rs.4 to Rs.5. This will be along with an increase in distance that can be traveled for the fare from 2.5 km to 5 km.
Similarly, the minimum fare for fast passenger services is hiked from Rs.5 to Rs. 7 with doubling of the distance that could be travelled.
There is no increase in the rate per km or the minimum fare for students. However, a marginal increase in fares will result from rounding of the fares to multiples of 50 paise and adjustment for increase in minimum wages for regular fares. The new rates have come to effect from August 8 (Sunday midnight). Announcing the revised fares, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said there would be no increase in fares for super fast, express, and other services. The minimum fare of 50 paise for students for travelling up to 2.5 km would remain the same.
As the Reserve Bank of India had discontinued the use of coins with denominations of less than 50 paise, two fare stages of 2.5 km each would be clubbed to calculate the next level of fares for students in multiples of 50 paise. Thus, journey for distances between 2.5 km to 7.5 km would cost Re.1 while that between 7.5 km to 12.5 km would cost Rs.1.50. Transport Minister V.S. Sivakumar told the media that the government had considered the report of the Justice Ramachandran Nair committee, while deciding to increase the fares. Its first report on revision of fares of group taxies and autorickshaws had been implemented by the last government.
The committee had recommended the revision of minimum fares for students from 50 paise to Re. 1 and fixing of the rates at 25 per cent of the fares for the public. But the government decided against it, as that could work out to be high compared to the existing rates. Besides, it was decided to extend the student concessions to limited stop ordinary bus services. The previous rate per km for ordinary services was 55 paise. So, the charge for the fourth fare stage (10 km) would work out to be Rs.7.75. As coins of 50 paise had been discontinued, that would be rounded off to Rs.8. When traveling 100 km at the revised rates, the overall increase in fare for a passenger would be of only Rs.2.
