EARTH HOUR 2011
Earth hour is a world event organized by world wildlife fund (WWF) to guide the world, the awareness of climate change. Earth Hour is first started in Sydney on 2007 and about 2.2 million people participated in the event. Earth hour is usually conducted on last Saturday of March from 8:30p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time in every country.
With almost 5 million supporters and a global network in over 100 countries, it’s one of the world’s largest independent conservation organizations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.
Mobiles, Social Medias and internets play a crucial role in the promotion of earth hour.
India joined earth hour movement 2 years back in 2009. In first year itself 5million Indians across 56 cities supported the event, and India saved about 1000MW in 1 hour. In 2010, 6million Indians joined the event, banks, Indian military academy, local cafes etc joined. Other land marks like India gate, red fort, Mumbai CST also joined.
Earth hour is asking every person, businesses etc to join the event to show their respect to the environment by turning off lights from 8:30p.m to 9:30p.m. local time, on March 26 Saturday.
IT companies like Wipro and many other companies also join this by turning off air-conditioner for 1 hour and their by saving about 19000units of electricity. 19000units means 16 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
We Team YesKerala is also promoting the Earth Hour idea and going to support Earth Hour 2011.
