Veteran Malayalam Actress Aranmula ponnamma dies at 96 years

The mother of Malayalam Cinema Aranmula Ponnamma passed away at the age of 96.  She died at a private hospital on Monday evening at Thiruvananthapuram. She was already in treatment due to different disease due to the old age. The funeral will be on Tuesday evening at Shantikavadam, Thiruvananthapuram.  Aranmula Ponnamma is the Grand Mother of Malayalam Actor, Suresh Gopi’s wife Radhika. She was living in the house of Suresh Gopi. Her husband KrishnaPillai, son Dr. Rajashekaran and daughter Rajamma were already passed away before some years back. Her last movie was Gaurisankaram.

Aranmula Ponnamma is the daughter of KeshavaPillai and ParukuttyAmma of famous Malelathu House at Aranmula of Pathanamthitta district. Her father died when she was only 9 years old. She start to study music first from her mother itself and then from Ambalapuzha Nanu Aashan.

She got married to KrishnaPillai of CheruPilla house when she was 14 years old. She got the job of a Music Teacher at Pala at the age of 16 years. She was a classmate of Philipose Mar Chrysostom at her school days. Mother of M.G. Radhakrishnan’s mother was her classmate at the Music Academy.

Aranmula Ponnamma’s debuted drama was Bhagyalakshmi with the father of singer K.J.Yesudas’s father Augustine Joseph on the year 1945. Her debuted movie was Sashidharan in the year 1950. In that movie she got the role of Miss. Kumari’s mother when she was 36 years old only. After that she got a lot of chance in the movies, but all the roles are mother roles. She was in the film industry for almost 60 years. She got the mother role of Thikkurisi, Satyan, Prem Nazir, Sukumaran, MohanLal, Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Kamal Haasan, Shivaji Ganeshan, Dileep, etc.

In 1995, she got the National award for Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Kathapurushan for the supporting actress and got the J.C. Daniel award of Kerala Government on 2006 and a lot of Kerala Government recognitions. Also she got Prem Nazir award, Madras Film Fans association award, Film Critics award, etc. She got the roles in more than 500 films as the role of mother and grand mother with four cinema generations.

One of the most sacred and celebrated ritual attukal pongala is being commemorated in Attukal Godess temple in Thiruvanandapuram district. The Attukal Pongala is very special for women who are the only participants in the ritual. So this temple is also named after the great gathering of women as “women’s Sabarimala”. The temple has got international recognition since it found its place in the “Guinness Book of World Records” as the largest annual gathering of women. Last year at least 3 million ladies assembled to offer pongala to Attukal deity.In the pongala ritual women prepare rice porridge seasoned with jaggary, coconut gratings and ghee to offer to the goddess. The ritual begins early morning of the day. The world famous Pongala is celebrated duting Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham(February- March)The ritual begins earlymorning of the day. By noon the prepared porridge or pongala would be blessed by the chief priest of the temple who carries the sword of the goddess. The women folk would take back home as ‘Prasadam’.

The history of the temple is related to the well-known Chilapahtikaram, the famous poem written by Illango in the 2nd century A.D. the deity of the temple is believed to be the incarnation of Kannaki. The story says that she took rest en route to Kodungalloor. A villager of Attukal had a vision about this. it this villager s who built the temple in Attukal. The history of the Pongala starts when local woman prepared pongala to please the goddess.

Another main attraction of Pongala is the presence of celebrities. K.S.Chithra, the famous back ground singer is regular devotee of pongala. Last year Miss World runner-up Parvathi Omanakkutan arrived from Mumbai for Pongala.

Chevrolet Beat is coming with the new LPG variant. New Chevrolet Beat LPG variant Launched with multipoint sequential injection technology.  They have launched it recently. From the words of the manufacturers the car is using the LPG kit of multipoint sequential injection technology. The smartech technology developed by General Moters is using in the new Chevrolet Beat LPG variant also.  The car can run 349Km with a full tank of LPG. Chevrolet Beat LPG is offering a mileage of 13.29km. The car has petrol tank of 35lt and lpg tank of 32.8lt and can use 28lt of lpg. The driver can select either petrol or LPG by using the button.  Once the petrol tank will be empty, the car will automatically run with the petrol.

Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the largest single operator container terminal in the country the Vallarpadam Container terminal. It was Manmohan Singh himself who had laid the foundation stone in 2005. The new port will be privately operated by the Dubai port world. It is the first port the country to operate in a SEZ.
VallarPadam terminal will make Kochi a key place in the shipping world and it will  reduce  India’s dependency on foreign ports, over forty to forty five percentage of  India’s containerized cargo is trans-shipped through Singapore, Dubai or Colombo.
The Dubai Port World is granted a 38-year contract for the  management and exclusive operation. The port costs more than 3,000 corers and is expected to bring this money back through Shipping. The terminal is able to handle large container vessels and can

handle 1m twenty-feet containers a year.

Vallarpadam will be completed in 3 phases. 1: 600m quay and a water-depth greater than 15 m(this phase is complete). 2:Capacity will be increased to 1.5 million Twenty Feet Equivalent Units. Once fully operational the capacity will increase to  5.5 million.

Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the port in February 10. After that he will will go to Trivandrum on a special flight. At4 pm he

willat the Gov. woman’s college. Next he will go and inaugurate the Kerala Vikasana Congress organized by KPCC.

R. Balakrishnapilla got 1 year Rigorous Imprisonment in Idamalayar case

Ex. Electricity Minister, R. Balakrishnapilla got I year Rigorous Imprisonment and Rs:10,000 fine in Idamalayar case. The other accused persons in the case also got the same. The  others are Ex. KSEB Board Chairman, R. Ramabhadran Nair and the main contractor P.K. Sajeevan.

The order is based on a apael filed by  Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan against a Kerala High Court judgment releasing former Minister R. Balakrishna Pillai and two others in the Idamalayar dam case.

The procecution case is like this Mr. Balakrishna Pillai  Electricity Minister in the UDF government from 1980-87,caused a loss of about 2 crore to KSEB by giving contract for the construction of a a power tunnel and surge shaft of the Idamalayar hidal project to now deceased K.P.Poulose at a above normal rate. First there were 11 accused, eight of them were acquitted and Balakrishna pillai and two others were sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment. But on an apeal to the High Court he was set free.
Mr Bhushan accused Balakrishna Pillai that the power terminal contract was awarded 188 per cent above the normal and contract for surge shaft 162 percent above normal. This hike was according to the special conditions put forward by the contractor.

Big increase in Kerala State’s Revenue – Economic Survey Report

Kerala Finance MinisterThe Economic Survey Report of Kerala State for the year 2010-11 submitted on the State Legislative Assembly Desk. As per the report, the revenue of the state showed a good increase on the revenue. The revenue is increased to 19.42%. On the previous year, it was 6.52% only. The growth rate of the public debt is decreased near to 2% but the public debt is increased than the previous year.

The public debt for the year 2010 is Rs:70,969 Crores. The Economic state of the State is  is increased to 9.89% as per the report. The internal production of the State is increased 9.89% to Rs:1,59,143.62 Crores.  the entire state debt is increased to Rs: 70,969 Crores. Total debt of last year was Rs: 20,176.10 Crores. The Tax revenue for the year 2009-10 was Rs: 17,625.02 crores. As per the predictions, the previous Budget was expected Rs: 20,884.23 Crores for the year 2010-11.

The Economic Survey is presented as part of the Kerala State Budget on tomorrow. The Business world is expecting a good budget from the Finance Minister Dr. Thomas Issac.
