IIT in Kerala… Finally?

IIT KeralaDuring Prime Minister’s recent visit to Kerala he had mentioned the need of an Institution of International standard in Kerala. It has been a long time waiting for our state, often referred to as a land of brains, to have an institution like IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). IITs are currently established in 15 states and it’s a shame one of them is not in Kerala. The State Government has promised to take measures, to realize this long time dream into a reality. But there are certain hurdles to clear before it becomes true. Various political parties who believe education and related fields are theirs to rule would find the proposal a bitter pill to swallow. IIT is purely governed by their own interests and political influence is little. Hence these so called parties who claim they are the ambassadors of education won’t be pleased. Kerala State Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy is in support of the project and believes the State Government could convince the Central Government to sanction the project. Another major worry for the purpose is availability of land. It would require a minimum of 200 acres of land for an institution of IIT’s caliber to begin with and around 300-400 acres of land for the Institution to work efficiently. We are already in shortage of land for various projects, but unlike them this one project we really would not want to miss. Hence there should be serious thoughts on the issue, and rapid measures are ought to be taken before this project also gets away from our grasps. But it’s not just about a single institution being established in our state. It’s about the possibilities it can bring to our land. The quality it brings to our education is huge and having such quality opposition makes rival Universities or Institutions to raise their standards as well. And such healthy competition eventually is an added advantage for our education and our future generations will benefit from this. An Institution completely dedicated to education and research, it’s a benefit in all ways to our educational system. There are 140 odd Engineering colleges in Kerala and students and the faculties from these colleges can continue their research here in IIT. Here we are looking forward to a bright future for our Educational system. There will be a lot of obstacles on the way, but the Government and the associated officials should have a clear view of the situations and any opposition should be tackled. There will be a lot of companies and firms who could come and establish themselves in Kerala, thus increasing opportunities. So we have to turn this dream into a reality, so that many young hearts could dream and fulfill those dreams, that too in the near future. It’s better late than never.

The world coconut day has been celebrated every year with different programs. These programs and the day celebrations are intended to improve the importance of coconut in our day to day lives. In this developing world, we are filling our lives with modern products and modernization. Some years before was it started that we recognized the vast opportunities that the natural resources of our own land offered us. Among them the most prominent one was the coconut farming. As every part of the tree was useful and was widely grown all over the state it soon gained importance. The tree of Kerala from which the state is said to have acquired it’s name was slowly regaining it’s lost life. The ‘ilaneer’ which is the drink obtained from the tree was found highly nutritious and good for health. It was realized that comparing to the soft drinks in the market it was highly nutritious and healthy and hardly harmful. Since then huge importance was given to the section of coconut farming and different encouragements were given to the farmers who showed excellence in the field.

Yet another world coconut day has passed and we hope the golden days of the favorite tree of Keralites return…
