Piravom by-election may be on February last or March first week. Central Election commission announced dates of legislative elections for five states. Though piravom is not in the nomination list, state govt. expecting for a soon action in the matter of Piravom. State election office has not got any information yet about the by-election. Election Commission often will consider celebration, exams, availability of officers while deciding the election dates. It is expecting to conduct the elections before April 30 since it’s the exam season from March 25. Election will not conduct during the exam time.

The election was necessitated following the death of the leader of Kerala Congress and civil supplies Minister T. M. Jacob. Both UDF and LDF parties are considering the election seriously. While M.J Jacob is nominated as LDF candidate, UDF has fielded K.C. Anoop Jacob, son of T. M Jacob against LDF. Related to the election LDF leaders are spreading the story of alleged corruption of ministry cabinet in dam issue. Opposition leader V.S. Achuthanthan claimed that many of the UDF government were facing corruption charges. In the midst of the dam issue, LDF has a possibility to easily wrest the seat in the election. However, UDF was expecting the seat that they could won the seat in the sympathetic background of T. M Jacob. In the last election CPM lost the seat by 157 votes.

By-election is conducting now in Manipur, Punjab, Uttaraghant, Uttar Pradesh and Goa. Voting will conduct on 28th in Manipur and on 30th in Uttaraghant. Voting in Uttar Pradesh is decided to conduct in 7 stages. And its first and last stage will be on February 8th and March 3rd. Election in Goa will be also on March 3. Vote counting of all these states are expecting to commence on March 6th.

Well it really seems to be possible in a near future. The State Government was shown green signal by the Central Government for the proposed Speed Rail project. At a meeting convened at the Prime Minister’s Office in Delhi last evening, the State was asked to draw up a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the scheme. The proposed project is worth 1 lakh crores. The meeting was convened in response to the Chief Minister’s, plea to the Prime Minister, seeking the Centre’s support for the mega project. The 580-km track will reduce end-to-end running time to two to three hours. The project is expected to be Private-Public partnership with technical and financial collaboration of the Indian Railways, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and central and state governments.

The high speed rail corridor project could well boost the infrastructure development of the state. Vinay Mittal, chairman of Railway Board, expressed interest in taking up the project during a high-level meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s office in New Delhi yesterday. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Pulok Chatterjee, Kerala chief secretary P Prabhakaran and the managing director of Infrastructure Kerala Ltd T Balakrishnan were also involved in the discussions. The dream project of Speed Rail corridor is the first one of its kind in India. The project is aimed at the overall development of the infrastructure of the state. The project had been proposed long time ago. Though in the initial phase, there is hope that the project will be on floors soon. If everything is set in the right track the project will commence somewhere before 2014 and will be completed in a few years from then.

The present Kerala Government had unveiled this mega project keeping on mind the development it would bring to the states infrastructure. The ambitious project will attract many partnerships and let us hope everything is set in the right track and nothing comes in the way to derail this huge project. For that would be a huge loss to our development strategies. Wishing good luck to the project.

The long time waiting Kochi Metro Railway project is finally heading for a green signal. The Kerala Government has entrusted the project to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) under the leadership of E. Sreedharan, the former Chief of the DMRC. The State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that reports of any difference between the Government and E. Sreedharan are baseless. The press conference was called for after a full board meeting of the State Planning Board at Thiruvananthapuram. E. Sreedharan is a full time member of the State Planning Board. The project had been going through controversies when there were reports about the State planning to call for global tender for the 5,200-crore Kochi Metro Rail project. All has been sorted out now.

The Government is planning to request the Central Government to appoint E. Sreedharan as the Chairman of the Kochi Metro Railway project. The Minister also added that the authority to appoint the Managing Director for the project remains with the State Government and the decision will be made soon. Meanwhile E. Sreedharan has said that he believes he would be able to commission the Kochi Metro Rail Project in 3 years. The 26-km long Kochi metro project is the first such project in Kerala. So the hopes are very high indeed. The project is believed to be a long term solution for the busy traffic at Ernakulam. The project will help the development of the City. Aryadan Muhammad, Power Minister said that the opposition to the appointment of DMRC as Project consultant was because of the doubt about Sreedharan’s role. He has already retired from DMRC.

Kochi mayor Tony Chammany had held discussions with the former DMRC chief regarding the project. On a question on getting support from agencies like the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the mayor promised that he would take up the issue with the respective authorities. District collector P I Sheik Pareeth said that the land acquisition procedures would gain momentum in the coming days. Kerala Merchants Union, which had been persistent on having Sreedharan and DMRC at the helm of affairs, expressed satisfaction over the government decision. Ending all doubts, Kerala’s first Metro Rail Project at Kochi is all set to become a reality. The project is a dream come true for Kochiites. The news has been warmly welcomed by them. The project will be a landmark in the history of this City. Wishing all the success for the project.

Vyttila Mobility hub is a transit terminal for all ways of transportation which is going to be a big entrée to Kochi. Site proposed for the hub connects Allapuzha, Coimbatore, Idduki, Kottayam and Thrissur through National Highway 47. It will be the meeting point of land, air and ferry transportation. The project is implementing through three phases. The first phase, which consists of the terminal for long distance buses, started in December 2010. And it was commissioned on Feb 26, 2011. It is facilitated with a resting area for 65 buses. And the second phase is the implementation of bus terminals and boat jetties and will begin soon. The third and last phase is to deliberate about new amendments.

The hub will be equipped with RFID (Radio frequency identification) to continuously monitor the buses plying from different places. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka bus services are going to open their ticket counters here soon. The state govt. is also considering a plan to connect the east Kochi with the upcoming mobility hub. But it will take a long time for the finishing the project. Being the Govt. funds are limited, the state is looking for the possibility to raise the funds for the project. If the Union bank supports the project by providing loan of about Rs. 100 crore, the second phase of the hub can be started. The Hub will also provide with multilevel car parking facilities and an advanced cafeteria. Electronic monitoring system to show the scheduled time of bus arrivals and departure will be a big help to the people. The full-fledged terminal is expected to be completed by 2013. With the introduction of Vyttila mobility hub there is going to be a tremendous change in the city. It will give Kochi a new face. Let’s wait for the miraculous vision to happen.

The project is initiated by the state Govt. and it has consulted Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to start the work. DMRC will implement the project. The project was first proposed in the year 2006 and was expecting to be completed by 2010. But it was delayed by various reasons. The state has sanctioned Rs.159 crores to the DMRC for the purpose. The project could be completed within 3 years. And the state is waiting for the sanction from central Govt. The expected railway will be in the model of Chennai or Delhi Metro Railway. The railway has proposed to span from Aluva to Petta. And it comprises of 26 stations altogether. Connection of Aluva to Petta is expected to complete in three stages. The total project is expected to Rs. 4000 crores. The cost estimated five years ago was Rs. 2000 crores. As the first step in the implementation of the project, the busiest North over bridge will be widened.

Metro railway cooperation has formed to undertake the supervision of the project works. Moreover it will be a project of the people. A new website is launched for the public to watch news updates about the project. The corporation has conducted a contest among students for logo design in the last month and would select the most suitable one. And the winner will get a cash prize of Rs.5000. The number of vehicles in the city has increased an average annual growth rate of 13%. As it concerns the Metro Rail will help to reduce the traffic in the industry city of Kerala. And it will ease the life of the ordinary people. As Kochi is a vastly populated city, it needs a multimode public transport system. Its expecting that a lot of Job opportunities will create regarding with The Kochi Metro Rail Project.

It was constructed by a British engineer under the supervision of Mr. Benny Cook in the year 1895 with the agreement signed by the king of Travancore. It was predicted with a life span of 50 years. There were occurred minor earthquakes before, since 1979. Since then safety concerns were raised by Kerala Government, due to the leaks and cracks in the dam. Now it was passed 66 years more than the expected life time.

The recently occurred tremors in Idukki had shaken the old dam. And so it is the current issue, that the dam will not suffer any more EQs with magnitude more than 6 in Richter scale. And if it occurs, it will become the terrific disaster that had ever occurred in the Asian continent. According to the study committee the temporary method to reduce the huge human loss is to lift down the water level from 136 feet to 120 feet. Kerala is willing to construct the new dam by stably providing sufficient water to Tamil Nadu. But this attempt is opposed by Tamil Nadu authorities. The reason that lined up by the state is that the dam is strong enough to withstand any tremors and so there is no need for a new one. Besides, Tamil Nadu is demanding to maintain the water level at 136 ft. itself to face the emerging needs for irrigation and power generation. They are saying that the Kerala political leaders are simply spreading panic among the public. So to make a solution to this problem, the Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy recommended the PM Manmohan Singh to directly involve in the issue. Also he suggested the Roorkee IIT to conduct a hazard assessment. Supreme Court is demanding a join settlement of two states in the issue. But it will not happen till the accusation among the political leaders of two states remains. If any disaster occurs, lakhs of people in four districts, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Alappuzha as well as the wild life sanctuary will be vanished. So by seriously considering the life of more than thirty lakh people, the state govt. should go ahead with the construction of a new dam.

Anyway this issue has made a threat among the people in Kerala. People protested against the lack of action throughout the state. It is notable that the Kerala state authorities have not taken any safety measures yet to protect the people residing down areas of the dam. Now the important thing is to take action to empty the surroundings of the dam. The failure of Periyar dam could lead to the failure of Idukki arch dam. Though the evacuation of people is impossible, state govt. should take precautions to protect the people. So it’s the time for the two states to stop its arguments and started to work together.
