POOKKALAMS- CELEBRATION OF OUR PROUD HERITAGE

Pookkalam, the most nostalgic of the memories that every Keralite has when he think of the season of Onam. Every time we hear the name, our minds fly to some sweet rituals and relinquishing memories of our childhood. And then we feel whatever we achieve, our happiness lies here bound to our culture.

The term refers to the marvellous design made in the yards filled with flowers. The festival of Onam is celebrated in Kerala for 10 days and hence the beautiful Pookkalams also decorate our front yards for the same period. But they differ in their sizes in all these days. The first day, Atham will have just a small one, a circle of smaller perimeter. And as the number of days advances the number of circles and the perimeter, both increases. Finally at Thiruvonam, a vast beautiful art with flowers will be displayed.

But these are all history now. We found these only in the memories of our elders and rarely in the villages. But Pookkalams are still there, overcoming all the modernisations and lifestyle advancements. They represent a proud and noble heritage we had which somewhat on the forgotten side now.

They represent a lifestyle that is close to nature- a lifestyle that knows no artificiality. No man made colours or plastic flowers found their place in our Pookkalams. It presents some flowers that have the smell of our villages.

The flowers that have prime importance in the making are Thumba (Lucas Aspera), Mukkutti (little tree plant), Kakka Poovu, Chemparathy (hibiscus), Thechi Poovu, Onginipoo (Lantana), Hanuman Kireedom (Red Pagoda plant) and Chethi (Ixora). The younger generation would wonder hearing many of the names stated wondering what these flowers are. And they should indeed as the majority of those flowers have vanished from our surroundings as we started to prefer artificial beauty.

The recent trend is to order the flowers at the flower shops for the competitions of Pookkalam. Schools colleges and clubs conduct various competitions with the arrival of the season and the main attraction of them is certainly the Pookkalams.

Yes. Pookkalams have been shifted from its place in our homes to a new one- among the competitions. As we are in the century of IT revolution, the internet is also contributing to our celebrations. Websites like www.onlineindiangames.com/pookkalam/ are conducting online games of Pookkalam.

Even in the competitions it is a delight to watch the kids making it. And wish heart fully that The Pookkalams regain their place in our lives…
